Services: Aftercare

Permanent Housing Program

An important aspect of the Gemma program is the transition to permanent housing with continued aftercare services. The Permanent Housing Program process begins while women are still in custody. In the Day Program women begin preparing for the housing search process with Gemma’s permanent housing curriculum. Barriers to permanent housing are addressed during time in the transitional residence. Upon graduation form the transitional house, women are assisted in finding a permanent place to live.

Gemma has established contacts with many landlords, property managers, and low-income housing agencies. Many landlords have expressed concern about taking a risk renting to someone with poor prior rental and credit histories. To help alleviate this concern, Gemma provides a rent guarantee fund to reimburse landlords in the case of an eviction. Hopefully this stage will never be reached because participants will continue to receive case management and therapy from Gemma, solving problems as they arise.

Gemma staff and volunteers work with each participant to find an appropriate home, based on her income, barriers, and individual needs. Through Gemma’s money management services, women will have saved enough for their deposit and first month’s rent before moving out. They will have completed renter training and will be prepared to meet with landlords. Participants will have a reliable income and a plan for maintaining their permanent housing. They will continue to receive Gemma’s supportive services for as long as they need.
